Local search is different in every city
Google's local results depend heavily on where the searcher is. A search for "physiotherapist" in downtown Toronto and the same search in Saskatoon return completely different businesses, with different levels of competition and different things it takes to win.
That is why we plan SEO around your actual market: how big and competitive it is, how far customers will travel, which languages they search in, which seasons drive demand, and which local organisations and media carry weight. The pages below describe the main markets we work in.
Major markets
Toronto and the GTA
The most competitive local search market in the country.
Montreal
French-first search in a bilingual city.
Vancouver
High-value services and a multilingual market.
Calgary
Quadrants, new communities and hail season.
Edmonton
A wide capital region with strong service demand.
Ottawa
Government, tech and bilingual audiences.
Winnipeg
Lower competition and faster results.
Halifax
The hub of Atlantic Canada.
How Canadian markets compare
A rough guide to local search competition for common service categories. Your category may differ: a niche specialist in Toronto can face less competition than a roofer in Halifax.
| Market | Typical competition | Things to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Toronto and the GTA | Very high | Neighbourhood targeting, review volume, strong content and links |
| Metro Vancouver | Very high | Separate municipalities, high-value searches, multilingual audiences |
| Montreal | High | French-first content and profiles, bilingual site structure |
| Calgary | Medium to high | Quadrants, new suburbs, weather-driven demand |
| Ottawa-Gatineau | Medium to high | Bilingual audience across two provinces, professional buyers |
| Edmonton region | Medium | Surrounding communities, winter demand, industrial B2B |
| Winnipeg | Low to medium | Quick wins, regional reach, seasonal extremes |
| Halifax | Low to medium | A spread-out municipality, Atlantic reach, tourism |

Not in one of these cities?
Most Canadian businesses are not in the largest cities, and many of our clients are not either. Businesses in places like Kitchener-Waterloo, London, Barrie, Kelowna, Kamloops, Saskatoon, Regina, Victoria, Quebec City, Sherbrooke, Moncton, Fredericton and St. John's often see results faster, because there is less local competition for search.
The approach is the same everywhere: understand how your customers search, make your Google Business Profile and website the best answer, and build the local reputation that Google rewards. Ask for a free review, wherever you are.
Common questions
Do you have offices in these cities?
We work remotely with clients across Canada. These pages describe the markets we serve; we do not claim local offices we do not have, and we advise our clients not to either.
Can my business rank in several cities?
In the organic results, yes, with strong pages for each area. In the map, your physical location matters most. If you have real locations in several cities, see multi-location SEO.
Is SEO cheaper in smaller cities?
Usually, because there is less competition and less work is needed to rank. Our plans are priced on the work involved, so smaller markets often fit our Local plan.
