Pick realistic keywords
Choose the 10 to 20 searches your customers use when they are ready to buy, such as "emergency plumber Calgary" or "family lawyer Halifax", not broad informational terms. Add up their monthly search volumes for Canada or your area.
Be honest about position
Reaching position one for every keyword is unlikely. Positions three to five across a set of keywords is a more realistic planning assumption for an established site.
Remember the map pack
For local searches, the map pack often appears above the organic results and takes many of the clicks. This estimator models organic results only; strong local SEO can add a significant number of calls on top.
Compare with ads
Multiply the estimated monthly visitors by what you pay per click in Google Ads for the same searches. That is roughly what the same traffic would cost each month in advertising.
